Recruited by the Boston Public Schools in 1994, Dawn Avery was targeted to develop a full-inclusion program at the Cleveland Middle School. Today she is a 6th and 7th Grade English Language Arts Teacher at the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain. She co-teaches two 6th grade sections at the school in an inclusion setting that consists of students functioning on grade level and students that have learning disabilities. She also teaches a 7th grade section in a resource room setting.
Dawn uses the Scholastic Read 180 Program, which is a reading intervention program targeting students reading at least two grades below level. This programs incorporates paperback books, audio books, a computer software program and other supplementary reading and writing materials. Students are initially tested to identify their reading level and then curriculum is tailored to their individual needs.
Dawn is also known for writing modified novels. She takes the suggested reading novels for the sixth and seventh grade curriculum and re-writes them on a readability level that meets the needs of her students.
